Avilla American Legion Post 240

AVILLA – The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919, as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. The Legion stands behind the issues most important to the nation’s Veterans community, and is backed by resolutions passed by the volunteer leadership including The Women’s Auxiliary and the Sons of the Legion.

The Avilla American Legion consists of the Legion, Sons of the American Legion and Auxiliary.

The Legion does Military Funerals for any Veteran.

On Memorial Day there is a Memorial Service at Avilla Cemetery and one of the other three local cemeteries.

All three groups sponsor college scholarships for graduating high school seniors. Christmas packages for the needy at Christmas time.

The Legion sponsors a junior boy to go to Boys State and the Auxiliary sponsors a junior girl to go to Girls State.

The SAL places the flags around town in the holder on the poles starting on Memorial Day to Veterans Day.

Our biggest fundraiser is our Fish and Chicken Dinners from September through the end of April. These dinners are open to the public.

In November, we have turkey bingo before Thanksgiving and that is open to the public. Every once in a while, we have dances and other events open to the public too.

If you are Veteran or spouse, son, daughter or grandchild of a Veteran, you may be eligible to join this organization.
