New ORV Helmet Law Takes Effect On July 1st

INDIANAPOLIS – The State of Indiana law will require, as of July 1, 2017, children under the age of 18 to wear a helmet when riding any off-road vehicle (ORV) on private or public property in Indiana.

Helmets that are considered as approved, are those that meet the U.S. Department of Transportation’s standards.

This new law will charge violators with a Class C infraction, which carries a maximum penalty of $500. Additionally, the law does not affect snowmobile riders, which does not fall under the definition of an ORV, per Indiana Code 14-8-2-185.
