AVILLA – More road improvements for Avilla are on the way. Governor Eric J. Holcomb and INDOT Commissioner Joe McGuinness recently announced that Avilla is receiving $679,987.50 in state-matching funds for road projects through the Next Level Roads Community Crossings Initiative.
Matching funds were also received by Avilla in 2016, the first year of the program. With these monies, Main Street was rebuilt by replacing curbs, sidewalks and pavement and by installing new underground stormwater pipes.
This year, the Community Crossings Initiative has awarded nearly $300 million in state-matching funds to local governments for road construction projects. A total of 467 communities applied for funds, which is a 48 percent increase from last year.
Community Crossings was created by the Indiana General Assembly and funds for the program are awarded from the state’s local road and bridge matching grant fund. Qualification for a community the size of Avilla is that they must provide 25 percent of matching funds, from a funding source approved for road and bridge construction. Additionally, they must submit an INDOT approved asset management plan for maintenance of existing bridges and roadways.
