Suspect in critical condition after shooting at DeKalb County Deputy

GARRETT – The Indiana State Police are investigating an Officer involved shooting which occurred last night in the 400 block of South Hamsher Street in Garrett IN, at approximately 8:20 pm. A DeKalb County Deputy initiated a traffic stop for an equipment violation and he was assisted by a Garrett City officer.

During that traffic stop, gunfire was exchanged with the suspect driving the vehicle. That gunfire resulted in non-life threatening injuries to the DeKalb County Deputy but did require him to be hospitalized overnight. He was released from the hospital this afternoon. He will be on administrative leave until further notice, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings. The Garrett City Police Officer was not injured and will also be on administrative leave.

The suspect in the case suffered gunshot wounds and is hospitalized in critical condition.

Interviews with all officers involved are expected to be completed within the next 72 hours. At the conclusion of the investigation, the DeKalb County Prosecutors office will be reviewing all the information submitted for consideration for any charges being filed.
