Odor during traffic stop leads to drug arrests

STEUBEN COUNTY – A man and a woman, both from St. Joseph County (IN) were arrested early this morning by Trooper Zarek Finley on multiple charges relating to methamphetamine, heroin and other illegal drugs.

At approximately 2:15 a.m., Finley stopped a 2000 Ford truck for equipment and registration violations at the Toll Plaza near Fremont. Finley smelled an odor of burnt marijuana coming from the passenger compartment of the truck and subsequently conducted a search of the vehicle.

As a result of the search, Finley allegedly found more than 100 grams of methamphet-amine, along with heroin, marijuana, prescription pills and drug paraphernalia. The driver, 58-year-old Arnold J. Scott of South Bend and his female passenger, 18-year-old Acasia J. Haynes of Mishawaka were both taken into custody without incident and incarcerated in the Steuben County Jail on the following preliminary charges:

Driving While Suspended, Class A Misdemeanor
Possession of Marijuana, Class B Misdemeanor

Acasia J. Haynes
Dealing Methamphetamine, Leve 2 Felony
Possession of Methamphetamine, Level 3 Felony
Possession of a Legend Drug, Level 6 Felony
Possession of Marijuana, Class B Misdemeanor
Possession of Paraphernalia, Class C Misdemeanor

Both Scott and Haynes are being held on $80,000 bond each.
