Christmas Contests Bring Holiday Cheer

AVILLA – Flying reindeer, lighted candy canes, twinkling lights, Christmas music, happy snowmen and many other Christmastime displays and symbols make the nights merry and bright in Avilla’s neighborhoods and some of these glorious homes entered this year’s Home Decorating Contest.

This is the third year that the Avilla Chamber of Commerce has hosted Christmas decorating contests. The Home Decorating Contest focuses on residents in the 46710 zip code who decorate their houses for the Christmas holiday season and who don’t mind having people drive by to look at and enjoy their handiwork and festive spirit.

The Tree Decorating Contest is comprised of entries from groups, businesses and non-profits in the area, but are this year, mostly Avilla Chamber members. The trees are purchased from Whispering Pines Christmas Tree Farm and while on display, either adorn the storefront windows on East Albion Street or light up the window or yard of the Avilla business or group who has entered the contest.

This year’s entries ranged from classic Christmas colors to handcrafted ornaments to sparkly snowflakes. The public voted for the beautifully and skillfully decorated tree entries and the tree with the most votes will receive a cash prize of $100.

There was a record number of entries for both contests this year. Chamber President Kevin Kelly said, “We were happy that those who entered were enthusiastic and excited to get to decorating. We’d like to be able to do things that are fun and interesting in Avilla. These contests are for sharing holiday cheer. Since lots of people drive around looking at decorated houses and it’s always nice to see your town decorated for Christmas, we felt this was a great idea. We hope to be able to help connect the community in the holiday season.”

The house contest and the tree contest both had six entries each and voting took place on the Avilla Chamber’s website and on Facebook, in the form of a post and polls. The Chamber posted “sneak peek” glimpses of each home and tree, giving the location of the display and the theme if one was specified. Readers were encouraged to visit each of the entries in person so that they could see everything that was being showcased by each of the decorators.

Nearly 8,100 votes were received within a 7-day period, setting another record for the contests.

The Christmas House Decorating Contest winner is, with 30% of the house votes, “Lights Lights”, which is located at 8942 E Swan Road in Avilla. The homeowners will be awarded $250 from Rock Solid Realty.

The Christmas Tree Decorating Contest winner is Avilla Liquors, who received 24% of the tree votes. The tree is currently located in the window of 109 East Albion Street in Avilla and will be there until Christmas Day.
